Victorian Brass Jet Dangle Earrings
Jet is a black fossilized wood (other theories believe it to be a form of coal or sap similar to amber) found in may countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It wasĀ formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There areĀ generally two recognized types: soft and hard jet. It is believed that the soft jet was formed in fresh water, and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore masses of jet. As a result, the jet trade received much publicity and entered a boom period moving far beyond simple mourning.
A wonderful and unusual pair of carvedĀ jetĀ earrings from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Each earring begins with a a cross-shaped surmount, which then leads to a larger, dangling, teardrop-shaped link. The body of the teardrop-shaped link features incredible carvings, which incorporate geometric, cross, and foliage-motifs. The teardrop-shaped link is encircled by a scalloped-border, and the negative space within the center of the link features an additional, smaller cross-shaped link. The earrings are completed by simple brass earring wires. A bold example of Victorian-era craftsmanship, these earrings would make a great addition to any antique jewelry collection!
Measurements:Ā Each earring hangs 2 1/8" long (including the earring wires) and measure 1" at their widest point.Ā
Condition:Ā The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, thereĀ is no apparent damage to the carved jet links, and the earrings wires are securely attached and in working order.
